A molecule makes its own catalyst : [RuCl(arene)(PCy 3 )]OTf (e. g. 1 ) with allyl or propyl propargyl ethers gives alkenylcarbene derivatives 2 by a metallo‐retro‐ene reaction. The latter species are efficient initiators for catalytic ring‐closing metathesis of allyl propargyl ethers into alkenylcycloalkenes and of dienes into cyclic alkenes (see scheme).
