Magnetic hollow Fe 3 O 4 –polymer hybrid nanospheres (see figure) were prepared by adding Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to an aqueous solution of polymer–monomer pairs composed of a cationic polymer (chitosan) and an anionic monomer (acrylic acid), followed by polymerization of acrylic acid and selective crosslinking of chitosan at the end of the polymerization.
