Another striking example for the functional diversity of RNA is represented by the recently discovered riboswitch ribozyme in the leader sequence of bacterial mRNAs. A simple mechanism is responsible for controlling expression of the corresponding gene (see scheme) and demonstrates that gene regulation is no longer a domain necessarily assisted by proteins.
