Raphael's “Mass of Bolsena” depicts the “miracle” that occurred in the small Italian village of Bolsena north of Rome in 1263. The cover picture shows part of the fresco, in which a “bleeding” host is the center of attention. Today we know that such phenomena, which could only be explained as a miracle in the Middle Ages, are caused by prodigiosin‐producing bacteria. With an emphasis on the total synthesis, A. Fürstner summarizes the chemistry and biology of these “prodigious” compounds in his Review on page 3582 ff.
