Born free : The germanium compound [( t Bu 2 MeSi) 3 Ge] + [B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] − ( 2 ), is obtained as extremely moisture‐sensitive dark red crystals by the treatment of the germyl radical 1 with [Ph 3 C] + [B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] − in benzene. The molecular structure of 2 , determined by X‐ray crystallography, suggests that 2 is a free germyl cation without π‐bond conjugation, with no interaction with either solvent molecules or counteranion.
