Activation of methane by metal peroxides: Calcium peroxide serves as an effective radical initiator in the liquid‐phase sulfonation of methane to methansulfonic acid (MSA) by SO 3 [Eq. (1)]. Under the best reaction conditions a 91 % conversion of SO 3 to MSA was achieved.$\rm{{\rm CH}_{4}+{\rm SO}_{3}\longrightarrow{{\rm metal}\ {\rm peroxide}}{{\scriptstyle65\,^{o}{\rm C},\ 5\,{\rm h}\atop{\scriptstyle{\rm solvent}\ {\rm sulfuric}\ {\rm acid}}}}{\rm CH}_{3}{\rm SO}_{3}{\rm H}}$
