Towards an understanding of chromatographic separation processes : The effect of the solvent composition on the strength of interaction between a chromatographic support and different organic substrates can be monitored by the relative intensity of the intramolecular negative transferred NOE effect (trNOE). The strength of interaction of different synthetic stationary phases with model substrates could be evaluated as changes in the observed trNOE (see picture Y=CH 2 or NH, R 1 =CH 3 , R 2 =phenyl).
