Anionic, cationic, and neutral : Gaseous gold dihalides can exist in three different oxidation states, namely: AuX 2 − , AuX 2 , and AuX 2 + (see scheme; X=Cl, Br). The dihalide structure is strongly preferred for anionic and neutral species, whereas experiment and theory suggest the presence of XX bonds in the cations.
