Generous diiodine? [(AgI 2 ) n ]⋅ n  MF 6 (M=Sb, As) prepared by the reactions of AgMF 6 with I 2 in liquid SO 2 , contain polymeric 1D chains [(AgI 2 ) n ] n + stacked down the c axis separated by sheets of [MF 6 ] − ions (see picture). The [(AgI 2 ) n ] n + ion is the first example in which a dihalogen molecule is coordinated to an uncomplexed metal cation, that is, a metal dihalogen homoleptic species and is a simple and rare example of molecular diiodine acting as a donor.
