Carbonization of aromatic sources in an aluminosilicate mesoporous template yields mesoporous carbon materials with highly graphitic framework structures and excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability (see picture). TEM analysis shows discoid graphitic layers that are packed so that the most preferred orientation of the c axes is along the direction of the template channels.
