Wetting the appetite for Ti II chemistry : Titanium metal is dissolved by aqueous acids in the presence of fluoride ions. The resulting green solution does not contain Ti III but a mixture of Ti II and Ti IV complexes. The presence of a d 2 Ti II species is confirmed by UV/Vis spectroscopy. A mixed‐valent solid, Ti II (Ti IV F 6 )(H 2 O) 4 , can be isolated from the solution and its structure parameters determined by powder diffraction (see picture, Ti IV red, Ti II blue).
