Ioning in distortions : Severe ionic distortions of phenyl‐substituted hydrocarbon anions are observed on coordination to Na + or K + ions. Alkali‐metal salts of 1,2‐diphenylbenzene (see picture: Na green, O red) and 1,2,3‐triphenylbenzene dianions are prepared by reduction, structurally characterized, and analyzed by density functional and natural bond order calculations. The reduction and subsequent cation coordination of the phenylbenzene ions dramatically distorts the structures of the hydrocarbon skeletons.
