A new look into an old pot : A new cluster structure is found for the cage anion 1 (see picture, L=dme) in the salt [Na(dme 3 )] + [Na 5 (P 2 Ph 2 )(dme) 3 ] − . This (structurally characterized) ionic compound is obtained in excellent yield when PhPCl 2 is simply reduced with sodium in a toluene/tetramethylethylene mixture. This method delivers catena ‐oligophosphane‐α,ω‐diides with two, three, or four phosphorus atoms.
