Structural characteristics significantly different to those of neutral SiC clusters are exhibited by isolated dianionic SiC clusters. The theoretical investigation of small, stable dianionic SiC clusters indicates that the free dianions SiC   6 2−( 1 ) and Si   6 2−( 2 ) are capable of existence. These molecules are predicted to be sufficiently long‐lived that they should be observable in a mass spectrometer.
