Direct fusion of the appropriate elements readily produces the A 4 Ge 9 compounds (A = Rb, Cs), which contain discrete Ge   9 4−clusters with the shape of monocapped square antiprisms (structure shown on the right). The clusters are the first deltahedral Zintl ions that can be made from solution as well as by a solid‐state reaction.
