A totally new mode of complexation is exhibited by the pentalene dianion ( 1 2− ): All eight carbon atoms are coordinated to only one metal atom, and the pentalene ligand is folded along the central CC bond. Like the complex‐bound 1 2− , the acepentalene dianion ( 2 2− ) is not planar, but has a shell‐like structure, and is therefore also expected to be able to function as a ligand in transition metal complexes.
