Quantitative extradiol cleavage of a catechol derivative is achieved by exposure of complex 1 to O 2 in the presence of AgBF 4 and an aromatic nitrogen base. These results provide insight into how the regiochemistry of oxidative cleavage may be controlled by the metal centers of the catechol dioxygenases.
