A highly efficient combination: template directing and olefin metathesis. The polyether dienes 1 react in good yields to give crown ethers 2 in the presence of LiClO 4 and the Ru catalyst 3 (Cy = cyclohexyl). Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of the cyclic olefins 2 results in polymers that are capable of regenerating 2 by template‐directed methathesis depolymerization.
