Complex polycyclic ring systems related to those of many natural products can be prepared from readily accessible starting materials by novel sequential reactions promoted by either SmI 2 or tetrathiafulvalene. Combinations of anionic and radical steps are possible, as in, for example, the SmI 2 ‐promoted transformation of 1 into 2 with twofold cyclization, which was described by Molander and Harris. TBS = t BuSiMe 2 , TMS = Me 3 Si, HMPA = (Me 3 N) 2 PO.
