Irradiation of aqueous suspensions of carbon black with a pulsed laser heats the carbon particles to high temperatures, initiating chemical reactions. In addition to H 2 , CO, and CO 2 , the usual products in the carbon–steam and shift reactions, CH 4 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 , and C 2 H 6 are also produced as the carbon is consumed.
