Both anti–anti–anti–anti and syn–syn–syn–syn conformations of the bound metal ions are possible with the new ligand N,N ′‐bis(α‐pyridyl)‐2,6‐diaminopyridine (H 2 tpda). Pentanuclear Co II and Ni II complexes are accessible with this ligand (see sketch on the right). The metal chain is helically wrapped by four all‐ syn tpda ligands.
