Layer compounds of the type Y 2 X 2 C 2 (X = Cl, Br, I) show superconductivity at temperatures between 2.3 and 11.2 K. The transition temperature is related to the tendency of conduction electrons toward pairwise localization in C 2 * states at the Fermi level, and changes with the concentration of valence electrons, which is varied by intercalation of Na.
