In the center of the molecule —and thus where it always is for fluorine chemists—sits one of the fluorine atoms of the PF 3 unit in the twelvemembered heterocycle P 6 N 6 F   13 −(structure shown on the right). However, in the eight‐membered ring in the P 4 N 4 F   9 −ion, the corresponding fluorine atom interacts with the three other phosphorus centers and forms the apex of a highly distorted square pyramid.
