A [Pr 9 NbN 6 ] cluster unit with a niobium atom centered in a tricapped trigonal prism of praseodymium atoms (shown on the right) is the important structural feature of the title compound. Nitrogen atoms occupy the tetrahedral cavities in all six Pr 3 Nb tetrahedra. This is the first example where a transition metal atom has been incorporated into a cluster framework of trivalent rare earth metal atoms.
