The simultaneous activation of CO 2 and CH 4 by Ta + ions in the gas phase was studied by means of FT‐ICR mass spectrometry. The cationic oxides TaO + and TaO   + 2can be obtained by reduction of CO 2 , but they are inert toward CH 4 . In contrast, the coupling of CO 2 and CH 4 is achieved by the complex [TaCH 2 O] + and yields TaO   + 2and C 2 H 2 O, which is probably a ketene.
