[Ga 5 ] 7− trigonal bipyramids and (M 6 N) 9+ octahedra are present in the crystal structures of the isotypic title compounds. The charge in these phases is balanced by two electrons in metallic states: {(M 6 N) 9+ [Ga 5 ] 7− · 2e − }. This simple model of the chemical bonding is supported by band structure calculations. A section of the hexagonal crystal structure together with a pseudo‐cubic unit cell is shown on the right.
