Resonance energy transfer (RET) is exploited in a novel assay of endoglucanase activity (see scheme below). The variation in the fluorescence intensity of a fluorogenic oligosaccharide is followed during its hydrolysis, allowing the determination of α‐amylase activity, one of the starch‐degrading enzymes, which is important for diagnosing diseases like parotitis (mumps) and acute pancreatitis.= sugar unit; F 1 ,F 2 = fluorophore.
