At about 460°C indigo ( 1 ) isomerizes to dibenzonaphthyridindione ( 2 ) in the gas phase remarkably smoothly with ring enlargement to incorporate the central CC double bond. The transition state was calculated (PM3) and is characterized by the rupture of the bonds between the carbonyl groups and the central CC unit.
