Owing to the steric bulk of the tert ‐butyl groups , the reactivity of the novel porphyrin 1 , which has a nonplanar macrocyclic framework, deviates distinctly from that of any other known porphyrin. For example, prolonged treatment of 1 in HClO 4 /MeOH leads to formation of 5,15‐dihydroporphyrin (“porphodi‐methene”) 2 .
