A functional model for the tetranuclear manganese cluster in the photosystem II of higher plants and cyanobacteria is now provided by binuclear dicationic manganese complexes such as 1 . In the anodic oxidation of aqueous acetonitrile containing these complexes water is oxidized to oxygen by a four‐electron process. An example of Ar is 4‐ t BuC 6 H 4 ; counterion ClO   4 − .
