The reaction of beryllium chloride, the appropriate diazabutadiene, and sodium provides the beryllium complex 1 . Its ligands are present as radical anions in solution. On addition of THF a diazabutadiene ligand is released by intramolecular electron transfer and an enediamide complex forms. R = C 6 H 5 , R 1 = C 6 H 4 CH 3 .
