The selective shift of the equilibrium in the title (1⇌2) is achieved by reaction with bases: weak bases such as NEt 3 or DABCO yield isocyanide complexes like 3 ; strong bases such as KO t Bu (+ MeI) afford carbene complexes like 4 .
