Five‐coordinate rhenium or technetium is found in the trigonal‐bipyramidal complexes of type 2. Neutral M III complexes with this geometry were prepared from the permetalates MO 4 −or from the octahedral M III species with the tetradentate, tripodal ligand 1 . The monodentate ligand R in the complexes 2 can be readily substituted.
