Golden lustrous crystals of the semiconductor Me 4 SbI 8 contain free ordered iodine chains (picture shown on the right), which are stabilized by the coordination of three Me 4 Sb + ions to every second I atom of the chain. These chains break if the octaiodide is dissolved. Me 4 SbI 8 can be prepared readily from Me 4 SbI and I 2 .
