The structure of the peroxides 1 , which arise on oxidation of the corresponding triarylmethyl radicals in air, remained unrecognized for a long time. The false assumption that triarylmethyl radicals are linked methyl‐to‐methyl on peroxidation parallels the earlier misconception that triphenylmethyl dimer was hexaphenylethane. R H, OCH 3 .
