Like a complicated puzzle containing pieces that do not belong, the determination of the structure of the active site of photosystem II presents several intricacies. The picture on the right shows a new model for the oxo‐ and carboxylato‐bridged Mn 4 cluster, which also considers the coordinated cofactors Ca 2+ and Cl − . The concept is based on spectroscopic data (ESR, EXAFS) from years of research.
