Bond‐length alternation is not found in the six‐membered ring of the title compound 1 by X‐ray structure analysis. Compound 1 undergoes Wittig reactions and can be oxidized to give the colored quinoid compound 2 , which in turn can be oxidized to yield the cyclopentanetrione derivative 3 . Compounds 2 and 3 were also characterized by X‐ray crystallography. Elimination of three equivalents of triphenylphosphane oxide from 1 could lead to C 6 or the products of its subsequent reactions.
