A distorted gallium octahedron , whose eight faces are capped by fluorine and oxygen atoms, is a description of the structure of Mes 6 Ga 6 F 4 O 4 ( 1 ) (see picture in which only the ipso C atoms of the mesityl groups are shown); 1 is accessible from [Mes 2 GaF] 2 and H 2 O. The bulky organo substituents shield the central GaFO framework from further hydrolysis.
