Steric interactions of the substituents weaken the strong NH … N hydrogen bonds (typical for porphycenes) in 1 (R = Me, Et) by increasing the N … N distance. As a consequence the coordination of metal ions, in particular of Zn 2+ ions, is facilitated. These findings can be expected to give impetus to the research into metalloporphycenes.
