Molecular rods such as 1 with a row of up to 18 atoms were obtained in preparative amounts by evaporation of graphite in the presence of helium and dicyanogen. The same experiments with chlorine as the reaction partner for the C plasma led to perchlorinated aromatic compounds. The carbon frameworks of these compounds are sections of the C 60 structure.
