A monomeric phosphorus(III)chalcogenide , thioxophosphane 1 was isolated and structurally characterized for the first time. Hitherto, thioxophosphanes of the type RPS, (R = halogen, alkyl, etc.) could be characterized only indirectly, because they are so reactive. The polar resonance structure is important for the description of the bonding of 1 .
