In the superbasic medium dimethylsulfoxide/KOH , potassium p ‐fluorobenzenesulfonate ( 1 ) can be treated with PH 3 [Eq. (a)], or primary or secondary phosphanes to afford water‐soluble phosphanes ( 3 ) containing sulfonated aromatic groups. The trianion [P(C 6 H 4 p SO 3 ) 3 ] in 2 · KCl · 0.5H 2 O is the first in this class of compounds that could be characterized by X‐ray crystallography.
