Two bipyridine units in the macrocycle and two phenanthroline arms are the noteworthy features of the new ligand 1 , which reacts spontaneously with Cu I and Ag I ions to form tetranuclear, double‐stranded helicates. In the copper complex the Cu ions, which have distorted tetrahedral coordination, lie at the corners of a regular rhombus.
