New carbon modifications and extensions to natural products chemistry are the motivation for the current investigations of enediynes. Twenty years ago, when this area was first in the spotlight, the synthesis of aromatic and antiaromatic π‐electron systems was the focus. In this highlight the many different aspects of the research then and now are discussed with particular emphasis on recent work by Nicolaou, Diederich, and Vollhardt.
