Cover Picture (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl. 5/1993)

The cover picture shows a side view of 5‐dimethylamino‐5′‐nitro‐2,2′‐bithiophene and solutions of this dye in several solvents. The pronounced solvatochromism of this almost planar bithiophene extends almost over the whole visible range, from λ 466 nm (in n ‐hexane, far left) to 597 nm (in formamide/ water, far right). As the absorption maxima correlate with Kamlet and Taft's π * scale, the solvent parameters can be determined reliably with only one indicates dye, where before a series was required.
