Very pure and crystalline, iodine azide IN 3 ( 1 ) can be obtained by reaction of silver azide and iodine in CFCl 3 and subsequent sublimation. According to the results of the X‐ray structure analysis in the solid state IN 3 consists of layers of chains, which contain twofold coordinated iodine atoms. The structural parameters of the IN 3 unit are in good agreement with the results of an ab initio calculation for IN 3 .
