The quartz microbalance in combination with crystalline organic coatings that selectively form clathrates with solvent molecules proves to be a sensitive sensor element. Thus bulky lactic acid derivatives such as 1 are used as sensor coatings to selectively detect vapors of dioxan and 1‐butanol in the ppm range.
