A big step forwards in nitrogenase research has been taken through the X‐ray structure analysis work of Bolin et al. and more recently Rees et al. The well‐substantiated structure proposed for the FeMo cofactors (see below) and the unusual “P clusters” (double cubanes incorporating Fe 4 S 4 units) now challenge chemists to synthesize functional model complexes.
