Beginning with inexpensive starting materials chlorins can be synthesized in a few steps. A hydroquinone and an estrogen unit are linked to chlorin rac ‐ 1 (R = H) by means of a (CH 2 ) 3 spacer on the OH group to provide a model for photosynthetic pigments, as well as fluorescence markers and sensitizers for medical applications.
