Heteropolynuclear compounds with photoactive groups can be synthesized in a controlled, stepwise manner, if first the N atoms of the 3,4‐dimethoxyphenylterpyridine ligands are coordinated to a Ru II complex fragment, then the second binding positions (OR groups) are unmasked and coordinated to a Pd complex fragment. Strong electronic interactions exist between the two parts of the complex in dication 1 , which result in interesting photochemical properties.
